The Department of the Navy (DoN) Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) – Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG Corps) Summer Internship provides a paid opportunity to gain valuable legal experience, academic credit, and greater insight into life as a Navy judge advocate. As a Navy JAG Corps intern, you’ll be assigned to a legal command/staff and gain experience in traditional Navy JAG Corps practice areas such as: military justice (criminal prosecution and defense), legal assistance (providing general legal advice to Sailors and their families), and command services (advising military commanders and their staffs).
The JAG Corps HBCU/MI Program’s objectives are to:
- Offer students the opportunity to gain real life experience in the legal profession,
- Encourage students to pursue a career in the Navy JAG Corps,
- Provide students an opportunity to gain an edge in the job market, establish networking opportunities, and gain professional confidence, and
- Raise student awareness of the Navy’s competencies in the legal profession.
Eligibility Requirements:
All student participants must be a United States citizen of good moral character; younger than 42 years of age at time you would begin active duty if selected as a judge advocate candidate*; and be a law student with at least one semester of school completed at the time of application, enrolled in an American Bar Association (ABA)-accredited law school deemed a Minority Serving Institution (MSI)** by the U.S. Department of Education.

For “Academic interests,” note any extracurricular activities from both undergraduate and law school.
For “Research” and “Technical Skills,” provide information related to legal work and military (if applicable).
For “Education,” include undergraduate and law school information.
