Selected interns will be introduced to the numerous career opportunities offered in Navy Medicine as well as experience technical, hands-on training at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) Silver Spring, MD. They will be paired with an NMRC principal investigator mentor and perform real world and mock research on a disease outbreak scenario, similar to current laboratory happenings with COVID-19. Interns will present a case report at a symposium with STEM students from various programs thus enhancing their peer, mentor and STEM community.
Objectives:
Encourage students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
Offer students the opportunity to gain real insight into each discipline of Navy Medicine: Medicine, Dentistry, Medical Administration (as well as Physical Therapy, Pharmacology, Optometry, Podiatry) and Nursing.
Provide interns an opportunity to gain an edge in applying for a prestigious career in Navy Medicine, foster strong networks of like-minded peers and gain professional confidence.
Raise student awareness of the opportunities to serve in Navy Medicine while highlighting the unique contributions of each Corps to the overall health of the warfighter.
Expose cohort of competitive interns to career resources that will sustain academic performance and nurture mental toughness.
Explore the ethos of entering a profession of civil service and gain an understanding into the healthy lifestyle necessary to sustain a well-rounded professional
Eligibility Requirements:
All student participants must be U.S. Citizens and a background check is required. Students must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 and be enrolled in an accredited four-year academic institution deemed as a Minority Serving Institution (MSI)* by the U.S. Department of Education.
