U.S. NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY (NRL) 

The Department of Navy (DoN) Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) – U.S. Naval Research Laboratory Internship Program provides an opportunity for talented students to conduct state of the art research relevant to the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Navy (DoN).

The NRL HBCU/MI Internship Program’s objectives are to:

  • Motivate students to pursue graduate-level degrees (e.g., MS, PhD, etc.) and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines,
  • Provide mentoring and advice to students while explaining the benefits of graduate-level education in science and technology (S&T) fields,
  • Enhance students’ skillsets through professional and career development workshops,
  • Promote teambuilding and networking through organized events,
  • Enlighten students on research areas relevant to DoN and DoD national defense,
  • Bridge the gap and contribute in building a strong, diverse workforce, and
  • Encourage research and educational partnerships between HBCU/MIs and government defense organizations.

The NRL HBCU/MI Internship Program is a highly competitive, paid internship that facilitates 10 weeks of scientific research on a well-designed project which targets goals and objectives in any of the research areas mentioned in the side panel.

Eligibility Requirements:

All student participants must be U.S. Citizens. Students must have at least a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 and be enrolled in an accredited four- year academic institution deemed as a Minority Serving Institution (MSI)* by the U.S. Department of Education. For more information, visit
